TRANSITION FROM OFFENSE TO DEFENSE AND VISE- VASSAL

TRANSITION MOVES FROM OFFENSE TO DEFENSE.



Welcome all ........
            For those who are new to this site, this site has all the information you need to become a better basketball player. and also information on how you can become a better athletes.
For now we would like to discus a very important topic in the game of basketball. the transition moves. 
i.e. going from offense to defense and then back from defense to offense.
           Most good players i have come across also from the pro. leagues , have the habit of just sticking to scoring (offense) and the bad part is that the coaches do not mind as long as you can help him put some basketball in the basket.

Well the down side is that even though he helps you score 10 or 15 good ones, but defensively gives away 10 to 15 good ones too, then ask your self, why is he on the court? because the truth is, he might as well be sitting on the bench.
            In other to avoid sitting your best offensive player the whole team needs to work on their transition moves so as to stop the opponents after a good transition offense.


Points to take note of when playing the game of basketball.
1. the Short Clock.
2. the Side Balls.
3. the Time Outs.
4. and most importantly, Communication.
5. Drills

1. The Clock.
          Know that the clock is always against you, the clock is never your friend, hence you should mind the clock both while playing defense and offense. by maximizing your time on offense if you can (run down the clock) and minimizing the time on defense, (make them take quick shorts or even no shorts at all).
this might sound easy to do, but in reality it is not easy at all. because no team would let you do what you want on the court without challenging you.
on offense:
    in other to maximize the time on offence, you need to run the clock down to the last 10 seconds or so depending on the team drills. unless it is a fast break (easy baskets) or you sport a hole on the defense (quick decision making), your work is to run the clock by passing the ball around couple of times and looking for the leaks as you pass.
what are the leaks?
. the shooting guard left wild open that is a quick one
. the point guard notice a mismatch on the down pick and roll, quick one.
. base line cut that leaves a player open, quick one.
apart from this situations, you wanna get down to the other end of the basketball court as fast as possible and move the ball around while you let the clock run down unless you sport any of the leaks mentioned above.(mismatch, bass-line cut, open shooter).

on defense:
       I can not emphasize this too much. the clock is not your friend in the game of basketball. imagine what you just did on offense, and that the opponent is trying to do the same.
Your best reaction hence is to move your legs back on defense as soon as you see the basketball go in the hoop. 
Unless their is a whistle been blown by the referee, you do not stop to celebrate your basket made, Run back on Defense.
From the first half of the court you should sprint back facing your own basket rim, and as soon as you reach the half  court, you should pivot turn and look for your defender while facing the opponents rim as they bring up the ball.
that way you would have enough time to re-position your self before you get to the danger zone on your own end of the court and guard you players properly.
After getting to your side of the court and preventing the quick basket (fast-break) you should now play as team by forcing the players to take a quick unbalanced short. rather than having them select their own shots or even run down the clock.
you can also force them to keep passing and not take any shot till the clock runs out. the clock is no ones friend.
as soon as your aim on defense is accomplished, transition to offense should be instantaneous (RUN).
remember: one person would not make a differences when it comes down to defense. it takes the whole team acting together before the real defense becomes visible.


2. Side Ball
         we are discussing the side ball transition play in basketball from offense to defense and vise-vassal because at this point, the basketball game stops for an instant which is enough to win or lose the basketball game.
hence your transition at this point of the game both defensively and offensively in basketball really matters.
offensively:
    should not waist time to set up or set picks in other to beat the defense. 
and also most of the time, the one passing the ball is always left open. hence as soon as the basketball is in you should immediately run and position your self to get the basketball again for a quick one on offense. 
side ball is a chance to catch the defense off guard, remember that.
defensively:
    you should know that side ball does not mean break time, it simply means the basketball is coming from a different direction, hence do not relax on defense when you hear the side ball whistle being blown.
get every one plus the guy in-bounding the basketball.



3. Time Outs
        You should use the time outs to your advantage during the basketball games.
-when you feel too much pressure from the opponents offense you should call a time out and regroup. 
-when their is a bad defensive transition on your team, call a time out and block the holes.
-when ever you leading and the opponents starts to gain momentum offensively, call a time out immediately and stop the flow.


4. Communication
              this is a very important subject to discus in the game of basketball, both defensively and offensively.
most player only communicate during offensive transition and stop communication while on the defensive transition.
this is very common but it is totally wrong. communication should be on both offense and defense. it helps the team stay alert and watch each others back.
Offense;
      on offense we have 2 types of communication, the sign language and the oral words.
the sign language (non-verbal action) is used to tell the team mates what to do without alerting the opponents defense. while the verbal language is a common word use to alert your team mate when you get open (e.g. Ball Ball Ball, Fast break...etc)
Defense;
      on defense, player do not usually communicate and this is very bad for the team. simply because there is only two eyes on front of you and you might not be able to notice some move being made on your blind sport. but if there is a team mate there to tell you that something is about to happen, you would immediately readjust your self and be ready for the situations.
verbal communications like (low pick , high pick, screen, cut, open shooter, double up, double team, close out, defense, rebound, box-out ........) are usually use to alert the team mates of an upcoming treat so that they may quickly and effectively react to it.
         
5. Drills
            well in basketball drills are like repetitions that makes something more permanent. hence doing different types of transition drills would help the team get better both on the defensive and offensive point of view. also it would prepare them for the real game situations and build up their confidence.
hence there is no such thing as "too much repetitions" it only make you close to being perfect.

It is true that there is a lot of controversy on where your foot should be while shooting the basketball. well it is also true that there are some facts that every basketball player and coaches have in common when it come to making a fundamental basketball shot.
i.e.
1. Catching the basketball in a basketball triple threat position
2. Making sure that the position of the leg of your shooting hand is not behind the other one. (this makes it hard to get the right explosion after catching the basketball).

3. Legs should not be too closed together while shooting the basketball(it makes your body swing from left to right while trying to shot the basketball).
4. Also make sure your legs are not too far apart while trying to shot the basketball (it reduces your explosive jump to the air while trying to shot the basketball).


THE "Triple Threat" POSITION CATCH

2 main controversy:


1. Some coaches would recommend that it is better if you catch the basketball then get into the triple threat position after a successful catch.


2. Other coaches would recommend it that you try to catch the basketball in a triple threat position all the time, to enable you to make a quicker decisions as soon as you touch the basketball.


My suggestion about catching the basketball from experience would be to combine the best of both world.
i.e.
Perfect CATCH & QUICK RELEASE or decision making


As we all know by now that it is not true that all the passes you get would be a perfect pass, so we have to work our way into developing our foot stepping while catching or receiving the basketball, so that we can make a better and quicker shot or decision as soon as we touch the basketball.


TWO type of foot steeping while catching the basketball


1. Hoop into the pass 
2. Step into the pass OR the one-two step.


Description:
1. hooping into the pass




   The hop step is done by jumping forward and landing with both legs just as soon as you are about to receive the basketball.
With knees slightly bent thus automatically putting you in a triple threat position as soon as you touch the basketball.


ADVANTAGES;
-It is quick and puts you in a attack mode as soon as you touch the basketball.(ready to shot, dibble, and pass)h


-Because you have landed on both legs, it also means that either foot (left / right) can be a pivot foot after you catch the basketball. (this makes you more illusive and unpredictable with the basketball).


2. Stepping into the pass

In the game of basketball it is also known as the one-two step.This step catch is done by stepping into the pass with your leading leg/foot as a pivot and squaring up to the basket rim with your other foot as you step forward.

This method of catching the basketball during the game is not as fast as the quick step but it is a fundamental and effective way of catching the basketball in order to ensure a better decision or shot after you have received the basketball.
But the advantage it has is that you can quickly explode to the rim with a quick dribble by changing your direction with your leading  leg as a pivot, and  as soon as you catch the basketball, the other leg busts towards where you want to go on your first dribble. instead of just squaring to the basket first.


NOTE : Make sure your first step is well timed with the point of contact with the basketball to avoid being giving a travel call for moving two foot right after you touch the basketball without dribbling the basketball. 




How to use these techniques:


a) Either it is a hoop step / one-two step catch, knees must always be slightly bent thus putting you in a triple attack position as soon as you catch the basketball.


b) You should train on catching the basketball on the Run and also while Standing to catch it.

c) Remember to always square up to the basket rim either by hopping or by planting your pivot foot (leading foot) with toes in the direction of the basket rim while catching the basketball.


d) By now you should have noticed that these methods are used in two places in the game of basketball. It is used while catching the basketball and while stopping after taking a dribble.


This brings us to our next topic, it is the Stop and Pop, and also the Catch and Shot.
