What helps increase your vertical jump? There are all kinds of programs floating around that promise to get you jumping higher, but which exercises are the best? Which exercises will honestly add inches to your jump and get you above the rim?
If you want to see a real increase in your vertical, it takes a microscopic more than just exercises. It also takes good fuel for the body, enough sleep, and permissible conditioning of the muscle. But still, strengthening the muscles is the most leading aspect, and so the exercises you select to use in your jump training need to be effective. They need to target the right muscles, in the right way, for the right duration.
There are abundance of exercises that promise big gains, but perceive the exercise, if it is going to effectively enlarge your muscles for jumping higher, should in some way mimic the jumping movement, so that your muscles not only are strengthened, but also found muscle memory - i.e., they remember the movement and are able to achieve it easier and more powerfully the next time you do it.
Here is one exercise that does this very well:
Rim Touches
1. Start from the elbow (at the projection of the foul line)
2. Take 2-3 quick steps straight through the key toward the basket and leap off one leg - like a lay-up - to touch the rim
3. When you jump, the leg that leads you - that leaves the floor first - is an leading factor. You need top thrust that knee up as high as possible. This will turn your forward momentum into upward force and get you jumping higher
4. If you can't touch the rim, then touch as high up on the mesh as you can
Be sure to do this jumping exercise off both legs, so you get to enlarge both left and right sides.
This exercise is a straightforward one, but effectively helps your vertical jump because it targets the muscles complex in the jump and it mimics the actual dunking motion. Also remember to focus on your technique - explosive push off from your jumping foot, honestly hard thrust upwards with your other knee, reach as high as you can. There are no shortcuts - all the time remain focused on continually enhancing what you can do.
And you can make a game of it: how far along your arm can you touch against the rim? Your wrist? Try your forearm next. Then try to touch your elbow. Continue to push yourself, and you will continue to found your abilities.
